Our tups went out at the beginning of November and wasted no time getting to work.
This means we’re expecting lambing to begin around April 5th, with a few pedigree Blue-Faced Leicester ewes mated to our neighbour’s fancy new tup due at the end of March. Last April was incredibly wet, so we’ll be hoping for drier weather this time around.
We scan the ewes before they are 90 days pregnant for the most accurate results. After scanning, those carrying twins or triplets are separated and given extra nutrition. Most lamb growth happens in the final weeks of pregnancy, and ewes carrying singles must be managed carefully—if they overeat, the lamb grows too large, making delivery difficult. Of course, the single-bearing ewes always act like they are starving and try to sneak into the “extra food” group!
